Ubuntu Workshop En het gaat er ook om jezelf tot uitdrukking te brengen, jezelf niet terug te houden, maar het risico te nemen je eigen ervaringen, je eigen kwaliteiten en je eigen zienswijzen in te brengen. Je doet dat niet alleen omdat het voor jezelf belangrijk is, maar ook omdat het voor de gemeenschap belangrijk is dat iedereen gehoord wordt, dat ieder zijn of haar bijdrage levert Ubuntu is het Afrikaanse levensgevoel, dat tot uiting komt in de filosofie, de ethiek, de manier van denken en doen en van met elkaar omgaan van Afrikaanse mensen die 'Ubuntu hebben'. Het wordt gekenmerkt door een besef van verbondenheid van de mensen met de hele kosmos en met alles wat leeft. Het gaat dus ook om de verbondenheid van mensen met elkaar. Die verbondenheid is met het bestaan gegeven en is niet te verbreken, wat er ook gebeurt. Maar Ubuntu gaat niet alleen over verbondenheid en gemeenschappelijkheid. Het gaat ook over de opdracht van ieder mens, om vanuit die verbondenheid zijn eigen weg te gaan, zijn eigen roeping te volgen, zijn eigen bijdrage te leveren aan de gemeenschap. |  |
Ubuntu Workshop Ubuntu is, in its core, a theology of relationships. Tutu says, "A self-sufficient human being is subhuman. I have gifts that you do not have, so consequently, I am unique- you have gifts that I do not have, so you are unique. God has made us so that we will need each other. We are made for a delicate network of interdependence. We see it on a macro level. Not even the most powerful nations in the world can be self-sufficient." Ubuntu is very difficult to render into a Western language. When we want to give high praise to someone we say, "Yu u nobuntu"; "Hey, so-and-so has ubuntu." Then you are generous, you are hospitable, you are friendly and caring and compassionate. You share what you have. It is to say, "My humanity is caught up, is inextricably bound up, in what is yours." . . . We say, "A person is a person through other persons." . . . A person with ubuntu is open and available to others, affirming of others, does not feel threatened that others are able and good, for he or she has a proper self-assurance that comes from knowing that he or she belongs in a greater whole and is diminished when others are humiliated or diminished, when others are tortured or oppressed.... To forgive is not just to be altruistic. It is the best form of self-interest. What dehumanizes you inexorably dehumanizes me.
